Will In-Flight Phone Service Be "The Next Big Thing?"
Emirates Airline of Dubai recently became the first carrier to introduce in-flight mobile phone services to their passengers. Being the first of its kind, this has spurred an industry debate about the marketability of mobile phone use on airplanes and passengers’ preferences when it comes to in-flight phone service.
According to Arabian Travel News, there is some debate about the overall acceptance of the mobile phone service among travelers. Contradicting studies show that about half of travelers prefer to be able to make calls in-flight and the other half are against it. However, the Dubai-based airline plans to stand behind the new service as they plan to invest US$ 27 million to outfit its fleet with the mobile phone system.
